Nasceu em Dublin no dia 16 de outubro de Seu nome completo é Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde. Seu pai, Willian Wilde, era médico e sua mãe, Jane Francesca Elgee, escritora.

Desde cedo mostrou que era brilhante. Se destacou na vida acadêmica ganhando prêmios na escola e, na universidade, recebeu o prêmio Newdigate com o poema Ravenna. Era a maior honra que os estudantes poderiam receber.

Foi um dos principais preponentes do Esteticismo, também conhecido como Dandismo. O Esteticismo foi um movimento artístico que valorizava a beleza em detrimento de outros valores, tais como os valores morais.

Oscar Fingal O'Fflahertie Wills Wilde[a] (16 October &#;&#; 30 November ) was an Irish poet and playwright. After writing in different forms throughout the s, he became one of the most popular and influential playwrights in London in the early s.[3] He is best remembered for his epigrams and plays, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, and his criminal conviction for gross indecency for homosexual acts.

    Vera; or, The Nihilists is a play by Oscar Wilde. It is a tragedy set in Russia and is loosely based on the life of Vera Zasulich.[1] It was Wilde's first play, and the first to be performed. A draft of the script was completed in and the following year arrangements were made for a one-off staging in London with Mrs. Bernard-Beere in the title role, but the production was cancelled. The first performance was in at New York’s Union Square Theatre, and was based on revisions made by Wilde while lecturing in America in The play, which starred Marie Prescott as Vera, was not a success and folded after only one week.[2] It is rarely revived.
